State inaction to blame for Tana chaos – cleric

“There must be enough policemen and police posts… even a helicopter so they can deal with these large numbers of criminals who easily escape,” added Anyienda.

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere announced the deployment of more than 1,000 paramilitary police officers to quell unrest in Tana River.

The officers who had just graduated from the General Service Unit (GSU) training college in Embakasi travelled to Tana River starting Wednesday evening and Thursday.

Relative normalcy has returned to the Tana Delta following the killing of four people on Tuesday morning, just a day after 38 others – including nine regular police officers – were killed in revenge attacks on Monday.

Anyienda however warned that the conflict could escalate as a result of bad politicking, but urged the political leaders and aspirants to engage in positive competition.

“Clergy is seen as clergy, politicians as politicians and elders as elders, there have been no joint meetings between them we only want to pull our heads together when things get explosive. It is an election year and there is bound to be blame games politicians taking advantage of the divide, they have not made the situation better,” he explained.

Already Galole MP Dhadho Godhana who was also Livestock and Development Assistant Minister has been charged and relieved of his duties over the Tana River Killings.

President Mwai Kibaki said Ghodana was dropped after investigations linked him with the violence in the Tana River Delta.

Godhana faced two counts of incitement to violence denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000 by Magistrate Lucy Nyambura.
