Voting kicked off in most polling stations on time/MUTHONI NJUKI

KANGEMA, Kenya, Sep 17 – Voters in Kangema constituency braved a chilly morning to cast votes for their favourite candidate in a by-election that will give them a new MP for the first time in 24 years.

The seat was held by the late Environment Minister John Michuki since the 80s.

There was good turnout as voters opted to cast their ballots early in the morning before embarking on other tasks.

Voters began trooping into polling centres from as early as 5am ready to choose an MP who will represent them for only six months before the March 4, 2013 general election.

The IEBC cleared six candidates in the polls.

Voters who spoke to Capital FM News expressed confidence in the ongoing process.

“I have come here so early because I want to send my candidate to work as I go to work,” said one voter.

“I have voted for someone who will address some of the issues that are of concern to us such us the bad roads, lack of water, electricity, education and the issue of our farm produce,” another voter said.

“I have come here so early because I want to send my candidate to work as I go to work,” said one voter.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Returning Officer Benson Njau attributed the high turnout to the voter education that they conducted at the ward level.

John Gathogo of Mkenya Solidarity Party cast his vote at 8.30am at the Muguru Primary School Polling Centre.
