NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 17 – One person was killed and three others seriously injured on Monday when they were buried under a pile of sand a construction site in Gigiri.

“One person was killed in the incident but the three others were injured,” Nairobi deputy provincial police Chief Moses Nyakwama said.
The incident occurred shortly before 3pm.
The four were excavating sand at a construction site within Gigiri when the mound caved in on them, killing one on the spot.
A manager supervising the work was saved by the police when workers attacked him, accusing him of forcing the workers who were trapped to excavate the sand yet they had allegedly warned him of the dangers involved.
Police who responded swiftly fired in the air to scare away the workers to save the manager.
Police said an investigation will be carried out to ascertain circumstances under which the incident occurred.
In May, scores of people were wounded when a house that was under construction collapsed in Westlands, raising fears of workers’ safety at such sites.
Cases of people dying at construction sites are common in Kenya in what experts blame on lack of strict adherence to construction regulations and safety of the workers who are usually paid poorly.
