“I had never thought I would stay like a refugee in my own country,” said Adhi Konchora who also fled Kilelengwani, having lost six of his relatives.

At least 107 people have been killed in three weeks during clashes between members of the Pokomo and Orma who have been fighting over water and grazing grounds.

“This is a political matter which needs a political solution… sending the GSU here will not assist because we don’t know how long they are going to stay here. What will happen when they leave. Will we not fight again,” Garlo Galgalo said.

The Cabinet on Thursday resolved to have the Tana Delta security crisis and killings investigated by a judicial commission.

Earlier in the week, President Mwai Kibaki had directed the police to arrest and prosecute leaders responsible for the ethnic violence – leading to the arrest of Galole MP Dadho Godhana who has since been charged in court.

The assistant minister subsequently lost his Livestock Development portfolio in the Cabinet.
