President Mwai Kibaki bids farewell to his Aide-de-Camp Geoffrey King’angi/PPS
NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 4 – The flight by public servants to join politics has cost President Mwai Kibaki his Aide-de-Camp (ADC).
Geoffrey King’angi resigned from the Kenya Defence Forces on Tuesday to vie for the Mbeere South Parliamentary seat.
The constituency currently known as Gachoka is currently represented by presidential aspirant Mutava Musyimi.
President Kibaki wished his former ADC who has been replaced by Lt. Col Peter Njiru the “best of luck in his future endeavours.”
King’angi joins a long list of at least 100 senior civil servants who have quit their lucrative positions to seek elective posts.
They include Government Spokesman Alfred Mutua, Permanent Secretaries Mohammed wa Mwachai (Wildlife) Kenneth Lusaka (Livestock), John Lonyangapuo (Public Works) and James Nyikal (Gender) among others.
Immediate former Administration Police Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua relinquished his post on Friday after months of speculation that he was eyeing the Governor’s position in Nakuru County.
Mutua told journalists that he was going to launch a bid to become the chief executive of Machakos County.
Lusaka is interested in becoming the Governor of Bungoma County while wa Mwachai will be contesting in Kwale.
Lonyangapuo is interested in West Pokot’s Senate position.
“I could not leave such a lucrative position to join politics if I know I am going to lose. I am very confident,” Mwachai said when he quit on Monday.
Kivutha Kibwana who served as an advisor to the president also quit to launch his bid for the Makueni County governorship position.
The Senior Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly Peter Omolo who is vying for the Kisumu County Governor’s post had quit earlier.
Several diplomats including Kenya’s Ambassador to China Julius Sunkuli, High Commissioner to Australia, Francis Tarus, and his counterpart in Nigeria, Francis Sigei are said to have sent in their quit notices to the Foreign Affairs Ministry here in Nairobi, long before Monday’s deadline.
Nairobi Town Clerk Roba Duba also resigned, barely three months after taking over from Philip Kisia, who quit to vie for Nairobi County Governor’s post.
