KDF finally hits Kismayu port

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 25 – Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) jets finally hit the terrorist Al Shabaab stronghold of Kismayu in Somalia on Tuesday, destroying a warehouse and the armoury at the main airport.

Several Al Shabaab militants were killed in the deadly attack that occurred when KDF jets shelled the town Tuesday afternoon

“They have destroyed the armoury and the warehouse used by Al Shabaab,” Military Spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna told Capital FM News on telephone.

He could not however, state the exact casualty figures.

“At this point in time, we are not able to know casualty figures but we will be able to give you that information once we get it,” Oguna stated.

KDF has been advancing towards the port of Kismayu since late last year when President Mwai Kibaki authorised a military incursion in Somalia, following a spate of attacks and kidnappings by the Al Shabaab militants in Kenya – including the abduction of foreigners.

Last week, KDF killed at least 100 Al Shabaab forces when they captured Janacabdalla and Harbolle towns, which are located near Kismayu.

The attack at Kismayu—considered the main bastion for Al Shabaab is seen as a major achievement for the Kenyan forces, who are fighting under the umbrella of AMISOM.
