NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 13 – Kenya’s oldest political party, KANU, on Thursday declared support for Raila Odinga’s presidential bid in the March 2013 General Election.
The Kenya Africa National Union Party Leader and Chairman Gideon Moi made the announcement in Ndhiwa constituency while campaigning for KANU’s candidate Tom Alila who will represent the party in Monday’s by-election.
Moi said that KANU will not be fielding a presidential candidate in the coming general election and instead will back the Orange Democratic Movement’s Odinga for the top seat.
Moi told the people of Ndhiwa to vote in the KANU candidate to give the Kalenjin community hope in ODM when next year’s elections are held.
Party Secretary General Nick Salat who accompanied Moi said KANU will be working on an alliance with ODM to make the engagement stronger.
Salat was insistent that the Kalenjin community was still in KANU despite the defection by many of the MPs who supported the party in the 2007 election.
He noted that an election win for the KANU candidate in Ndhiwa by-election will cement the re-union that is yet to be solidified.
Moi made several stopovers during the campaign including in Ongengo, Ndhiwa, Aora Chuodho and Pala area.
The announcement comes a day before KANU announces its intention to form a coalition with the New Vision Party led by former Keiyo South MP Nicholas Biwott.
The agreement which was to be announced on Thursday was put on hold to enable the KANU top brass to campaign for the party’s candidate in the Ndhiwa by election.
