NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 5 – Police are looking for two house helps who allegedly murdered their female employer in Nairobi’s Parklands estate on Wednesday and fled.

Neighbours said the two are sisters who were working in different houses within the same apartment block where the incident occurred.

“One of the house help works on the first floor while the second worked in the deceased’s house,” a neighbour said. “We saw her go to the house where her sister works but we did not bother because they are sisters who usually interact whenever they are at work.”

The mother of two was found unconscious in her house by neighbours who had gone to call her to buy vegetables from vendors who usually visit them in the morning.

When they failed to get a response, they pushed the door open only to find her lying unconscious in a pool of blood. Her mouth was stuffed with pieces of clothes.

“It appears she was hit on the head and strangled because there was a lot of blood,” one neighbour who helped carry her out to hospital said.

Police and neighbours identified the deceased as Trupty Shetty.

The name of one of the house help who worked for the family was only given as Pauline.

She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Aga Khan Hospital, according to neighbours who rushed her for emergency treatment.

Guards at the apartment said they saw the house helps leave the compound but did not suspect anything because they usually leave on completion of their tasks.

“They left in intervals. The first one who works for the deceased was the first to leave followed after a short while by her sister. Each one of them told me they had finished their work and would come the following day and since this was the routine I did not suspect anything,” a guard at the apartment said.

One of the house help worked in two different houses, for about two hours each.

Police from Parklands police station visited the scene and collected pieces of evidence after dusting the murder scene for finger prints.

Nairobi deputy police Chief Moses Nyakwama said a manhunt for the two women had been launched.

“We will get them; they cannot just commit murder and disappear. They will have to be found to face justice,” he said and appealed to employers to “always take details from their employees even when they are casual labourers.”

In a different incident, a middle-aged man who attempted to commit suicide after killing his girlfriend is admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Police said the incident occurred on Tuesday night in Dagoretti where the two were drinking before they differed, leading to a violent confrontation.

“He is under arrest and will be taken to court to face murder charges as soon as he is out of hospital,” Nyakwama said.
