The problem of teeth becoming a stained brown is a common problem among Nakuru residents/MUTHONI NJUKI

Hope for Nakuru residents over stained teeth

The Nakuru deflouridation company has designed filters that can be used at household, institutional and community levels.

However, the Nakuru water Company cannot use this technology.

“Why I am saying it is not possible is because the maintenance costs are too high in that they will be filtering a lot of water in a day for the whole of Nakuru town and then at the same time this water is being used for the wrong reasons like irrigation,” Wanja explains.

But she says if the residents can adopt the bonechar technology and defluoridate water at drinking and cooking level, it will help in keeping them away from dental and skeletal fluorosis which are very expensive to manage.

For example, cleaning or whitening browned teeth vary depending on the cleaning agent and can cost up to Sh10, 000 per jaw depending on the bleaching agent.

Wainaina says the cost of crowns which are also used in the cleaning can cost between Sh18, 000 to Sh25, 000 per tooth.

“You would have to check the level of damage that the fluoride has done to the client. Sometimes if they are just spotted stains, those we can whiten using a process called bleaching where we give you some chemicals, it’s a bleaching agent and these are applied on your teeth and we do a home bleach process so you apply it every night for a period of 21 nights and the stains go,” Wainaina explains.

“There is also a system that we use called laser. These are for higher levels of staining where we shine a laser light on you and we apply the bleaching agent and we allow this to work for about two hours and you get the desired results. However, we only recommend laser bleaching if it is really excessive staining. However some stains will not actually respond to bleaching and for that matter especially where they are disfigured, we actually advice them for crowns. They provide good colour stability, they don’t ever change and that’s the way forward for treatment with people with high level of flourosis,” she says.
