The Head of State who spoke when he officiated the opening of the ASK show said security forces will remain on high alert.

MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug 30 – President Mwai Kibaki on Thursday warned that his government will not tolerate criminal acts, following violent incidents witnessed in Mombasa since Monday.

The Head of State who spoke when he officiated the opening of the ASK show said security forces will remain on high alert to ensure those breaking the law are dealt with in accordance with the law.

“We are not going to allow any negative forces to interfere with our peace,” Kibaki said adding “We must maintain peace, which is the foundation of democracy.”

He spoke at the port city of Mombasa which has experienced cases of insecurity following demonstrations by Muslim youths who have been protesting the murder of controversial cleric Aboud Rogo.

Five people have been killed – including police officers – and dozens wounded in the chaos.

Those killed were three prison officers and two civilians who were either stabbed, shot or died as a result of shrapnel injuries in grenade attacks.

One of the attacks occurred Wednesday night when a grenade was hurled at a police truck within Saba Saba area.

“We must embrace tolerance and co-exist peacefully as one nation,” the president said, in his first remarks since the Mombasa violence started on Monday.

The controversial Muslim cleric killed by unknown assailants Monday was on a United States and UN sanctions list for involvement in recruiting Al Shabaab members as well as providing material and logistical support to the Al Qaeda-linked group.

Rogo was killed when gunmen in a saloon car blocked his van within Bamburi area before they opened fire, killing him instantly.

His wife who was with him in the vehicle suffered a gunshot injury to the leg but Rogo’s father and son were unhurt.

Some Muslim groups, including the Muslim Human Rights Forum have accused the police of complicity in the murder, claiming he was executed.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere has however, denied involvement of any of his officers and pledged to investigate the murder thoroughly.
