Four passengers died on the spot while eight others were hurt in a road accident at Kyumvi area in Machakos on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 4 – At least five people died and scores were injured in two separate road accidents in Machakos and Kisumu on Saturday.
The multiple vehicle accident involved a lorry carrying bags of maize, a saloon car and a 14 seater Matatu.
The injured were transferred to Machakos level 5 hospital.
In Kisumu, one person was killed in a road accident that left ten people with injuries at Rae centre in Nyando district.
Area police boss Patrick Mbarire said the driver of the Passenger Service Vehicle lost control and landed in a ditch on the Kisumu-Kisii road.
“One person died on impact as four escaped with serious injuries while the rest had minor injuries,” he said.
“Those injured were rushed to Ahero district hospital for treatment where some have already been discharged.”
Mbarire said they had launched an investigation on the cause of the accident.
Over 3,000 lives are lost annually to road accidents in Kenya, placing it among the countries with highest rate of accidents globally, despite its low level motorization compared to other developed economies.
Currently an estimated 1.3 million are killed in road crashes worldwide each year and for every death up to 50 people are injured or disabled.
Road traffic injuries are the leading worldwide cause of death among young people between the age of 15 and 29 and second most common cause of death for those between the ages of five and 14 years.
