NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 24 – A warrant of arrest has been issued against businessman Samuel Ogot Baker after he failed to honour summons to appear in court.
Senior Principal Magistrate Lucy Nyambura issued the warrant after he failed to turn up in court for the second time.
Baker who is to be charged along two senior officials of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), was first required to appear in court on July 12 to answer to fraud charges.
Baker is facing two counts of fraudulently acquiring Sh5.93 million and Sh1.46 million from KNBS for purporting to have rendered warehouse services for census materials.
The businessman is to be charged alongside the Director General of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Antony Kilele and Procurement Manager Fred Ayiera who denied the charges.
Kilele and his co-accused Ayiera are out on a cash bail of Sh500,000 each.
They were charged that in September 2009 at Herufi House in Nairobi being persons charged with the management of public revenue at KNBS failed to comply with the law relating to the Public Procurement and Disposal Act by not using open tendering methods as stipulated in Section 29 (1) of the Act, 2005 in the procurement of storage space for census materials.
