Police not convinced Nairobi pastor attacked

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 30 – Nairobi police on Monday poked holes into allegations by a preacher who had claimed that gunmen had sprayed his moving car with bullets on Saturday.

Provincial police boss Anthony Kibuchi said preliminary investigations showed that the incident was most likely stage-managed as the bullet marks show that the vehicle must have been stationary rather than in motion as pastor Michael Njoroge of the Fire Gospel Ministries had reported.

Njoroge was disarmed on Sunday after police poked holes into his claims that his vehicle was sprayed with bullets in Embakasi on Saturday.

“We are carrying out further investigations and we have many questions to ask. The pastor alleges that he was shot by unknown people when driving and the entry of the bullet and exit are corresponding. Thorough investigations will be done by the ballistic experts and give their final report,” Kibuchi said.

“When we visited the scene of crime we did not get the cartridges at the scene. His firearm – a Cesca pistol – had 12 rounds of ammunition out of the 15 which it is supposed to hold,” he added.

Kibuchi confirmed that the car was stationary as opposed to the reports by Njoroge.

“According to us this vehicle was shot when it was not it motion; it was stagnant, that is what we are saying and we need to verify the allegations made by him,” he said.

Kibuchi has cautioned civilian firearms holders not to abuse the privilege of owning a gun.

“We do not license people to hold firearms just to joke with them, show off or stage manage some incidences. We normally give them out for self protection. If somebody goes on to misuse them, the Chief Firearms Officers has the right to revoke the license without notice,” he asserted.

“We have revoked several this year, one in Ong’ata Rongai who shot a neighbour’s sheep which had entered into his compound, another one in Kasarani who displayed his gun in bar for show off and many others,” he explained.
