A statement from the IEBC said that seven civic by-elections will also be held alongside the constituency elections/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 24 – The much awaited by-elections for Kajiado North, Ndhiwa and Kangema constituencies will be held on September 17, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced on Tuesday.

A statement from the IEBC said that seven civic by-elections will also be held alongside the constituency elections.

According to the IEBC schedule, political parties are expected to conduct nominations by August 15 and present their candidates for clearance to the IEBC on August 23.

John Michuki who was the MP of Kangema died after a short illness in February while George Saitoti of Kajiado North and Joshua Ojode of Ndhiwa died in a police helicopter crash on June 10.

The two from the Internal Security Ministry died alongside two pilots Captain Nancy Gituanja and Captain Luke Oyugi and two bodyguards inspector Joshua Tonkei and Sergeant Thomas Murimi.

There was a dilemma in calling for the by-elections as Speaker Kenneth Marende’s hands were tied with the enactment of the Elections Act.

The speaker lost power to declare parliamentary seats vacant, which was contained in the repealed the National Assembly and Presidential Elections Act.
