The boy survived the attack in which two children were killed when a pack of hyenas raided their manyatta as they slept in Dilmanyale village on Tuesday last week.
“Musa Jelle was mauled on the face by a pack of hyenas which attacked a manyatta his family was sleeping in at Dilmanyale, Wajir County, on the night of June 10, 2012,” a statement from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said.
KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said they will meet all the flight and medical expenses for the boy in Nairobi.
“The boy’s condition had since deteriorated necessitating his referral for treatment in Nairobi,” Udoto said.
The boy was treated at the Garissa District Hospital while his other family members were treated and discharged from Habaswein District Hospital.
Udoto said KWS has already given the affected family a consolation fee of Sh20,000 and paid medical expenses of Sh57,000 incurred by the boy at the Garissa District hospital.
KWS said it had already taken measures to curb further attacks in the region.
“KWS rangers pursued and eliminated the hyenas. They are also on the ground engaging local communities for sensitisation and awareness on human-wildlife conflict mitigation measures,” the KWS statement said.
Cases of human-wildlife conflict are on the increase in the country lately.
Last month, furious residents of Kitengela killed six lions after they invaded villages and killed goats.
The KWS said it is addressing the issue after 18 people were killed in human-wildlife conflict since January.
