NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 13 – Police in Nairobi are holding a woman arrested on Tuesday night with a hand grenade and three pistols.

Police said the woman was arrested in Rurii area of Zimmerman estate.

“She had a hand grenade, three Ceska pistols and eleven bullets,” Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi said.

The woman was briefly detained at the Kasarani police station before detectives handed her over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for further questioning.

“She is undergoing intensive interrogation,” the police chief said.

Police said they were also hunting down her accomplices.

“Most likely she is operating with other people. We don’t think she is alone in this,” one police officer who had spoken to her during the interrogation session said but declined to reveal what she told them.

Police said the woman will be charged in court once the investigation is complete. She was likely to appear in court later Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Kenya police are on a high alert following threats issued by members of Al Shabaab a week ago.

The Al Qaeda-linked militia group has threatened to bring down skyscrapers in Nairobi, heightening tension among city residents.

As a result, police have heightened security patrols.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said they had also intensified intelligence gathering to avert any terror threat in the country.

Three weeks ago, suspected Al Shabaab militants set off a conventional bomb at a building on Moi Avenue in Nairobi, that left one person dead and 37 others wounded.

No suspect has been arrested over the blast.

Meanwhile, police are looking for gangsters who stormed a health club on Mombasa Road, near South C and shot at a man who was among dozens working out at the time.

The incident occurred when six suspected robbers raided the gym located at Almex Plaza.

Kibuchi told Capital FM News that most of the people there were robbed of money and other valuables, before one of them was shot and wounded.

“The man who was shot is admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital where he is undergoing treatment,” Kibuchi said.
