MP to be charged over abusive text

The complaint against the MP was filed in July last year at the Nyanza CID offices by the Anglican Church priest George Odhiambo/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 7 – The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has given police the go-ahead to charge Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo for allegedly sending abusive text messages to a priest in his constituency.

A source aware of the directive, said the file had already left the DPP’s office “and the matter is now with the police.”

“The consent was given.  The DPP has agreed the MP should be charged,” the source said, but he did not provide any further details.

CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro however told Capital FM News that he was not aware of the directive.

Nyanza CID chief Joseph Mugwanja who handled the complaint was not immediately available for comment.

The complaint against the MP was filed in July last year at the Nyanza CID offices by the Anglican Church priest George Odhiambo.

The priest had reportedly told police that he had been imploring upon the MP to pay taxes after seeing him address a press conference insisting he will not pay taxes, resulting to what he considered a nasty exchange on telephone.

The priest runs a youth and orphan’s project in Rarieda.
