Kibaki described the rescue operation as swift, ingenious and heroic/XINHUA

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 2 – President Mwai Kibaki has thanked the British Government and NATO coalition forces for rescuing four humanitarian aid workers who were kidnapped on May 22 this year and held in a cave in a remote province in north-west Afghanistan.

Among the rescued aid workers was a 26-year-old Kenyan, Moragwa Oirere, an employee of Medair, a humanitarian non-governmental organisation based in Switzerland.

“Kenyans are delighted and grateful to the British Government and all parties involved for freeing Moragwa Oirere and all her colleagues,” said the president.

President Kibaki described the rescue operation which was authorized by Prime Minister David Cameron and US General John Allen, the top commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, as “impressively swift, ingenious and heroic.”

The aid workers who are all employees of Medair were kidnapped while travelling on horseback to treat villagers suffering from malnutrition in Badakhshan.

The president further noted that the rescue operation sent a clear message to terrorists around the world that they will ultimately be outwitted and defeated.

The president thanked the NATO coalition forces for their continued efforts to stabilize Afghanistan noting that instability has turned that country into a training ground for terrorists who undertake criminal activities around the world.
