ICGLR Executive Secretary Alphonse Ntumba Luaba greets President Kibaki/PPS

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 5 – The International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has commended President Mwai Kibaki for spearheading regional peace initiatives.

ICGLR Executive Secretary Alphonse Ntumba Luaba noted that Kenya, under the stewardship of President Kibaki, has played a leading role in the promotion of peace and stability particularly in Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia.

The incoming ICGLR Executive Secretary also condemned the acts of terrorism visited on Kenyans by negatives forces.

Luaba, who took over from Liberata Mulamula as the ICGLR Executive Secretary in December 2011, was speaking on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy call on the president at his Harambee House office.

During the meeting, President Kibaki and Luaba also discussed the security situation in the Great Lakes region.

Luaba noted that although regional peace initiatives have improved security and reduced incidences of armed conflicts, existence of negative forces remained a threat to peace and security.

“These negative forces are active in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Congo and Somalia,” Luaba said.

On his part, President Kibaki reiterated Kenya’s full commitment to the implementation of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region peace and security protocols.

The Head of State welcomed recent initiatives geared towards addressing security challenges posed by negative forces in the region.

The president particularly pointed out that Kenya, as a guarantor of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005, is committed to ensuring that peace and stability is restored and all pending issues are resolved through diplomatic means.
