NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 26 – The Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) has suspended five senior officials over alleged embezzlement of commission funds.
CIC chairman Charles Nyachae said on Tuesday that the commission had taken the action to commence and facilitate an investigation into the allegations of fraud.
Nyachae said that the action taken was on the basis of documents the commission received and that investigations will unearth the truth of the matters at the commission.
“At this point there is not much information but the documents we have received indicate that the commission has lost money. We leave that to investigators to tell us if money was lost or if there was an attempt to misappropriate public money,” he said.
He however failed to name the five officials saying that it will be unfair to them while the investigations have not been completed.
The CIC chairman insisted that the commission being a public institution will want public funds to be spent in a manner that serves public interest.
Insiders at the commission who spoke to Capital FM News on condition of anonymity however revealed that those suspended included the Head of Finance, the Human Resource head and three accountants.
The fate of the five suspended officers will be subject to the report of the investigating team.
CIC was set up in 2010 with the mandate to monitor, facilitate, coordinate and oversee the development of the legislation and administrative procedures required to implement the Constitution
It is composed of Nyachae as Chairman Elizabeth Muli as vice chair and commissioners Imaana Kibaaya Laibuta, Peter Wanyande, Kamotho Waiganjo, Catherine Muyeka Mumma, Ibrahim Ali, Philemon Mwaisaka and Florence Omosa.
