NAIROBI, Kenya, May 11 – The owner of Club Click Jackson Maina Wangui and a bouncer facing charges for allegedly murdering a patron at the bar have been taken to the Mathari Hospital for mental checkup.
Police wanted to determine if Maina – popularly known as Jack Rousse – and the bouncer Joseph Kirero Sepi were mentally fit to stand trial for murder.
“It is part of the investigations we are carrying out before we return them to court on Tuesday for their murder case,” a senior police officer involved in the investigation told Capital FM News.
Their family members were present at the Industrial Area police station on Friday morning when they were taken out of the cells and driven to the hospital.
Doctors at the psychiatric facility later ruled that Maina and the bouncer are of sound mind and can stand a murder trial – according to officers investigating the case.
The suspects did not utter a word to journalists as they were led away while handcuffed together. Maina could be seen trying to hide away from cameras as he sat in the backseat of the police car.
Both appeared at the Milimani Law courts on Wednesday but did not plead to murder charges after police asked for more time to complete their investigations.
They are accused of murdering Kevin Oduor Onyango, a 24-year-old man popularly known as Odu, who worked at a family business known as Iseme Kenya on Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi.
The firm located on the second floor of Thande House specialises in renovations, pest control, sanitary services and supply of detergents.
A brother to the deceased said they once fumigated Club Click where his brother was shot dead on Tuesday morning.
The shooting occurred inside the club on Tuesday morning after a commotion the bar management claims was triggered by a lost mobile phone.
Oduor had been drinking in the club with his friends when the commotion occurred at about 3am and they all fled when they saw him being dragged upstairs.
He was then shot at point blank in the head and died instantly.
The exact cause of the commotion in the club on the second floor remains unclear just as the circumstances under which he was shot on the fourth floor.
Police have however, said it is not in dispute that the gun used to kill him had been licenced to Wangui.
