AP killed, 2 injured in Dadaab landmine attack

DAADAB, Kenya, May 15 – An Administration Police officer was killed on Tuesday and two others seriously wounded after their vehicle drove over a landmine in Dadaab.

The officers were escorting officials of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for an assignment when the incident occurred at Dagahaley, a town outside Dadaab refugee camp.

“An officer has been killed, and two are wounded. They were killed when their vehicle was blown up by a landmine,” a police officer in the area said.

Area Provincial Police chief Leo Nyongesa did not provide details of the incident but he has confirmed the death.

He did not immediately link the incident to the notorious Al Shabaab group.

A police officer in Dadaab however said they suspect the landmine was planted by Al Shabaab militants or their sympathisers.

“They (Al Shabaab) have been doing this, it is not the first time they are attacking police officers. We highly suspect they are the ones who did it,” the police officer said.

The police vehicle was badly damaged but reports indicate that two other officers escaped unhurt.

The wounded officers were due to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Incidents of attacks by Al Shabaab mainly targeted at security forces in the Eastern and North Eastern Provinces have been on the increase since Kenyan military forces crossed into Somalia to battle the terrorist group.
