NAIROBI, Kenya, May 31 – Fifteen people were killed when a bus they were traveling in plunged into a valley in West Pokot on Wednesday night.

62 other passengers are admitted to hospitals in Kapenguria and Kitale following the accident that occurred at Kamatira, about 20 kilometers from Kapenguria, police said.

“It was a terrible accident, we lost 15 people on the spot,” Rift Valley Provincial Police Chief Francis Munyambu said.

He said the accident occurred when the driver of the bus tried to manouver a sharp corner, before the bus plunged into the valley.

It took several hours before residents and other rescuers managed to pull out survivors from the wreckage of the bus.

Munyambu told Capital FM News that the injured survivors were being treated at the Kapenguria and Kitale hospitals.

The bus was ferrying the passengers to Lodwar.
