The suspect was killed in a shoot out with police officers in Nairobi’s Kibera slum on Saturday night, according to police.
“We have been pursuing them, they engaged our officers but one of them was killed,” Lang’ata divisional CID Chief James Manuni said.
He said the slain thug was in the company of three other men who managed to escape during the shoot out.
Police said the thugs were armed with an AK 47 rifle when they were confronted by police but no police officer was injured in the attack.
Tobiko’s bodyguards were attacked on Monday last week while driving on the Southern by-pass where they exchanged fire with the thugs.
No injuries were reported in the incident which Tobiko later said did not target him in any way.
“This was a normal robbery because I have been made to understand the area where this incident occurred is notorious with criminals, however I am surprised that gunmen can attack even a government vehicle in broad daylight,” Tobiko told Capital FM News in an interview shortly after the attack.
Tobiko was not in his vehicle at the time of the attack that occurred at about 3 pm last Monday.
During the incident, the window on the driver’s side of the DPP’s vehicle was shattered in the shootout. A bullet hole was also visible on the driver’s door while a third bullet hit the windscreen.
His two bodyguards who had just dropped him off in his office engaged the thugs who were armed with an AK47 in a shootout but the assailants fled.
“There were no injuries reported but the DPP’s vehicle was slightly damaged,” Lang’ata Divisional police Chief David Bunei said.
The two Administration Police officers assigned to guard the DPP told police they were driving along the bypass when the two men attacked them.
The incident was reported at the station under OB27/9/4//2012.
The DPP’s bodyguard told police they fired seven rounds of ammunition at the thugs who shot at them thrice.
Police said they had received numerous complaints from motorists over insecurity on the Southern bypass that starts on Mombasa road near the Ole Sereni Hotel, crossing through Lang’ata road, Ngong’ road and linking up with the Nakuru highway near Kikuyu.
