Deputy Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru said the accident occurred at the Zambezi area in Muguga, Kiambaa.
“Tthe dead comprise 10 adults and three children,” he told Capital FM News.
Witnesses said the truck hit the matatu that was headed in the opposite direction.
” I just saw something fly in the air before a loud bang, it’s shocking that 13 people have died just like that,” said John Mwangi.
“The truck hit a pothole and landed on this side ramming into the matatu.”
The survivors two boys and a girl were rushed to the nearby Kikuyu hospital for treatment.
“At least this time we can say that the matatu driver who unfortunately died in the crash did not cause the accident,” said Kimaru.
Kikuyu MP Lewis Nguyai who arrived at the scene urged the Ministry of Roads to urgently rehabilitate the busy highway.
“You can see that this highway has been neglected and yet it’s a critical link to western Kenya and Uganda,” he said.
“The truck driver is in our custody helping us establish the cause of the accident,” Kimaru said.
Road accidents in Kenya are common due to reckless driving and the poor conditions of roads and vehicles.
