NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 17 – Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi met with MPs from Western Kenya on Tuesday and declared that he must be on the presidential ballot in the next election.

The Sabatia MP, who is also the ODM’s Deputy Party Leader recently fell out with the party bigwigs after they submitted the constitution to the Registrar of Political Parties creating uncertainty and apprehension among members.

“The resolve I have to be a presidential candidate come the next general elections is every high. I believe that Kenyans should have the option to choose the best individual from a list of those interested to lead this country,” said Mudavadi.

He is unhappy that ODM presented compliance documents to the Registrar of Political Parties without first amending the clause that says the party leader will be the automatic presidential flag bearer.

Mudavadi and his faction wanted the rules amended by the National Governing Council and the National Delegates Conference, while Odinga’s allies argued that the party needed to first apply for registration to beat the April 30 deadline.

Tuesday’s meeting was attended by 18 lawmakers among them Cabinet Ministers Moses Wetangula (Trade), Wycliffe Oparanya (Planning), Noah Wekesa (Forestry), and Soita Shitanda (Housing).

Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa was not present but members of his New Ford Kenya party led by Shitanda and Boni Khalwale attended the meeting which considered the possibility of the region fielding and backing one candidate.

“There are so many issues to be discussed; so many issues to be answered. We don’t want to take anything for guaranteed, we don’t want to take anybody for guaranteed we will want to consult very broadly,” he said.

Others at the meeting were Assistant Ministers Bifwoli Wakoli (Lands), Manyala Keya (Gender), George Khaniri (Information).

MPs Eseli Simiyu (Kimilili), Chris Okemo (Nambale), Khalwale (Ikolomani), David Were (Matungu), Yusuf Chanzu (Vihiga), Alfred Sambu (Webuye), Evans Akula (Khwisero), Justus Kizito (Shinyalu) and Ben Washiali (Mumias) were also present.
