NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 11 – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has dispelled speculation that he was the target of Monday’s armed attack on his official vehicle.
In an interview with Capital FM News, Tobiko made it clear that the attack was not different from the kind of insecurity many other Kenyans experience on the Southern by-pass, as he explained he did not think anyone was after him.
“I take it as a normal act of crime. The vehicle just happened to have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. I have absolutely no evidence to suggest that I was being targeted at all. I have no evidence to suggest any foul play,” he asserted.
Tobiko said the attack on his official vehicle signified there are high levels of insecurity in the country.
He said it was worrisome, if at all thugs could attack a government vehicle in broad daylight.
“I found it strange that thugs can attack a government vehicle in broad daylight. It tells you about impunity and disregard for law and order,” he said.
He also pointed fingers at criminals who were not afraid of committing crimes irrespective of who their targets are.
For him, it was an indication that the country was in dire need of security as he expressed serious concerns that Kenyans have to use the Southern by-pass which is recognised as a an easy target for robbers.
During the Monday afternoon incident, Tobiko’s official car was shot at moments after he was dropped in his office. The window on the driver’s side was shattered in the shootout.
A bullet hole was also visible on the driver’s door while a third bullet hit the windscreen. His bodyguards returned fire and scared off the attackers.
