Climber dies in Mount Kenya expedition

Mount Kenya is Kenya's highest and Africa's second highest mountain

NYERI, Kenya, Apr 6 – A 29-year-old man has died while on an expedition to climb Mount Kenya, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has said.

The man from Nairobi was part of a 27-member hiking party which entered Mt Kenya National Park on Sunday and was due to exit on Friday.

KWS says the deceased fell ill while hiking at Point Lenana of Mt Kenya.

“He complained of headache, chest pains and difficulty in breathing. He, however, managed to climb down to Mackinder’s Camp,” said the KWS statement.

“An alert was sent to the KWS mountain rescue team who responded immediately and did everything humanely possible to rescue the climber, including seeking the help from a helicopter from a private operator, Lady Lori (K) Ltd which arrived at 11am, on Thursday.”

Adverse weather conditions however could not allow the helicopter to access the mountain which forced KWS rangers to carry the patient for six hours down. They were joined by a paramedic team from the Kenya Red Cross.

“Unfortunately, the patient passed on while being evacuated down the Naromoru route just a few moments before reaching a waiting ambulance,” said KWS.

The deceased climber’s body was taken to Outspan mortuary in Nyeri Town.
