NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 16 – Police are now questioning the wife of a suspected terror suspect whose photograph was circulated last December alongside that of Sylvester Opiyo alias Musa Osodo who was arrested soon after Saturday’s grenade attacks in Nairobi.
Police said Husna Ali Shabaan, wife of Hussein Nderitu was picked up Friday morning and was being interrogated by detectives from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.
She was being interrogated on the whereabouts of her husband Nderitu who surrendered to police last December after his photograph and that of Opiyo were circulated. They were interrogated briefly at the time and set free.
“Nderitu’s wife was picked up this [Friday] morning and she is being interrogated,” her lawyer Chacha Mwita said “it is difficult to understand why she is being interrogated because Nderitu has been away in Nyeri for three weeks so the reason for her arrest is unknown.”
A police source said the woman was being interrogated on the whereabouts of her husband.
The ATPU officers were also interrogating Opiyo and three minors arrested with him last Sunday in Umoja estate.
The four were ordered to appear before the detectives on Friday after they were bonded on Tuesday.
Police have not said if they have any evidence on any of the suspects over the grenade attacks that killed seven people and wounded 60 others at the Machakos bus terminus.
Mwita represents Opiyo, Nderitu and the three minors.
Poice have been interrogating the suspects to determine if any or all of them have information on the grenade attacks that killed seven people and wounded more than 60 others.
Four grenades were hurled at a crowd waiting to board busses at the city’s largest and most congested terminus, killing three people on the spot. Four others died on the way to hospital or upon arrival in hospital.
On Friday, Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi said they had enhanced security in the city, in the wake of this new terror threats.
“We continue to receive these threats, the Al Shabaab have continued threatening for another attack this weekend and I appeal to every Nairobian to be extra alert,” Kibuchi said.
