NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 29 – Former President Daniel arap Moi has slammed the decision his party Kenya African National Union (KANU) to cancel a National Delegates Conference slated for Friday
In a statement, the former KANU chairman said that it was unfeeling for the KANU leadership to keep on announcing dates for the National Delegate’s Conference and later postpone them without adequate notice and credible reason.
The statement said: “Delegates feel insulted when they travel from such distant places as Mandera, Moyale and Lokitaung at great expense in terms of money and time only to be told the conference had been postponed indefinitely.”
The NDC was initially scheduled for January 30 and later postponed to February 14th.
Moi has expressed concerns that the lack of clear, sincere and responsible leadership in the party may lead to it’s deregistration if it does not comply with the Political Parties Act.
All existing political parties have one month to comply with the law regulating political parties with a deadline of April 30.
“This spectre of a possible deregistration is causing the genuine party members great concern, frustration and anxiety. As a Kanu life member, I should not be silent on such a crucial matter,” further read Moi’s statement.
The former president has called on the KANU leadership to strengthen the party in rift valley where majority of KANU members come from.
“We should strengthen the party there and preach peace to avoid a recurrence of violence,” said the statement sent by press secretary Lee Njiru.
The crucial meeting to discuss and adopt strategies ahead of the forthcoming general elections was postponed on Wednesday just 48 hours shy of Friday.
In a brief statement sent to newsrooms, party Chairman Uhuru Kenyatta said that the NDC was cancelled to allow branches make their members recruitment returns so that it complies with the Political Parties Act.
Kenyatta said that the conference will take place at a later date.
Kenyatta finds himself in quite a complicated position following calls by his party secretary General Nick Salat that Kenyatta immediately declares the party he will use to run for President in the forthcoming general elections.
Salat said that members were surprised that Kenyatta last week asked GEMA leaders for one month to think which party ticket he will run on.
