NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 21 – A Kenyan woman who was brutally assaulted in Dubai last month died Tuesday after weeks of undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit there.

The woman in her mid twenties was reportedly assaulted at a car park late last month by a group of young men as she waited to board a taxi in the company of her female friends.

She had been in a coma since the day she was brutally assaulted by the young men, who are reported to have descended on her with kicks and blows.

Two young men were initially detained by Dubai police over the attack but there are no immediate reports if they were arraigned in court, according to Gulf Newsonline.

The woman had been working as a sales clerk at a major store in a Dubai mall.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry in Nairobi said it had been formally notified of the woman’s death but could not discuss further on the status of the investigation about the woman’s death.

Medical officials had indicated that the woman experienced low levels of brain activity, during much of her time at the ICU.

Witnesses told Dubai police that the attack occurred at a car park behind a five star hotel when the women were confronted by a group of young men, who reportedly insulted them and started beating two of them up.

The Gulf News, quoting Dubai police reported that the woman had suffered serious internal injuries in her head, and was rushed to hospital with blood leaking from her ears, nose and mouth.

“One suspect, who beat the girl, remains in custody while the other suspect has been released on bail,” a police official told Gulf News.

“The suspects are facing primary charges of assault that led to injury and if during the investigation new evidence surfaces, then the charges might be modified. In similar cases if the victim dies, a suspect is usually charged with assault leading to death,” he said.

According to the Gulf News, two women directly involved in the altercation reported that they were accompanying Esther to a waiting taxi on the dark early morning when a group of young men in their early 20s approached them and started attacking them.

The unwarranted advances by one of the youth led to the escalation of violence, before one of them hit the Kenyan women severally, leaving her unconscious.

The men are reported to have fled the scene in a vehicle but were detained soon after.

An official at the Foreign Affairs Ministry told Capital News they were assisting the family to get the woman’s body back home as soon as possible.
