Council workers in Nairobi boycott duty over pay

Workers vow to continue with the strike until their dues are paid/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 13 – Workers at the City Council of Nairobi have boycotted work over delayed payment of their February salaries.

No services were offered at the council on Tuesday as the workers staged a protest outside City Hall.

Addressing the workers, nominated councillor Mutunga Mutungi said there was no reason why they should not be paid on time.

“For some people, the bubble has burst now. For others, the writing is now on the wall. You can lie to people sometime but you cannot do it all the time. It has now reached a point where the person who is responsible for the delay of salaries needs to pay for his deeds,” he said.

He stated that the delay in salary payment also reflected badly on the ability of Town Clerk Philip Kisia to manage the council.

“Now that the February salary has delayed, are we going to continue like this till December despite the fact that people are now beating their chests that they want to vie for a bigger seat in the coming elections? Do you think we will give you the seat and you cannot even manage the City Council of Nairobi?” he posed. “When we were with John Gakuo, we were getting our salaries on the 27th of every month and when it is late we got it on the 2nd.”

Another nominated civic leader Simba Arati observed that the council should use its funds reserves to pay the workers.

Speaking to Capital News, one of the workers said the delay was causing a lot of backlog in their monthly payments.

He said no communication had been received from City Hall despite their pleas leading to the mass action.

“I have not been paid and that is the reason I am here. I have worked for 30 days and I need to be paid. It is good that justice prevails especially for workers so that once they work, then they can be paid,” he stated.

He stressed that they will go back to their posts only after receiving their dues, failure to which they would continue to picket.

“We have been told that maybe by 1pm or 2pm, we shall be paid but without proof of that money, we are not going away from here.

We are not going backward and if we are not paid, then we shall not go back to work,” he said.
