Blind man grilled in grenade probe

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 – A blind man is now among suspects questioned by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in ongoing investigations into the recent grenade attacks that left nine people dead Nairobi.

The blind man was picked up by ATPU officers outside Jamia Mosque and questioned for several hours before he was set free at about 8pm.

The suspect told his family and friends he wasn’t sure where he was interrogated at, but sources have confirmed he was held by the ATPU officers.

The officers wanted to know if he had any knowledge of certain vehicles which are under investigation.

He denied any knowledge of them because he is blind.

Four suspects who have already been questioned were interrogated afresh on Monday.

Those subjected to more grilling included Sylvester Opiyo aka Musa Osodo, who had been on the police anti-terror watch list since December.

Opiyo was arrested alongside three minors on March 11, a day after the grenade attacks and locked up before being set free the following day on condition that they present themselves for further questioning.

Police have questioned them at least four times on different occasions since then, and Monday was the fifth time.

“After Friday’s interrogations, they were ordered to report back there today (Monday),” their lawyer Chacha Mwita said.

The ATPU officers have been interrogating the suspects over the grenade attacks that killed nine people and wounded more than 60 others.

No suspect has been prosecuted over the attacks which authorities have blamed on the notorious Al Shabaab terrorist group of Somalia which has strong ties with Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network.

Al Shabaab has however denied organising the attacks but authorities insist they were involved.

Kenya sent its military forces into Somalia last October to pursue the notorious Al Shabaab militant group which it blames for several kidnappings and other attacks inside its territory.

Several hundreds of the militants have been killed since then while nearly two dozen Kenyan officers have been killed in cross fire.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere was expected to give an update of the grenade blast investigation and other security matters in the country at a press conference later on Monday.
