Uhuru-Ruto preferred pair under G7 – poll

Poll shows Uhuru-Ruto alliance most preferred/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 – A new opinion poll indicates that a majority of Kenyans would prefer Uhuru Kenyatta to run for the presidency with William Ruto as his running mate under the G7 Alliance.

According to an Ipsos Synovate poll released on Monday, 32 percent of those polled approved a Kenyatta-Ruto ticket, compared to 14 percent who prefer Kalonzo Musyoka to be Kenyatta’s running mate.

Other preferred pairings in the G7 alliance are Musyoka with Eugene Wamalwa and Kalonzo with other candidates each at eight percent.

The research was conducted between January 21 and February 2 but was not released earlier because it touched on issues pertaining Kenyatta and Ruto.

“On 2nd February 2012, The High Court had banned all public debate on whether Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto are eligible to contest the presidency – hence the reason Ipsos-Synovate did not release these results.”

Overall, Prime Minister Raila Odinga still remained the most preferred candidate at 31 percent followed by Kenyatta at 24 percent, and Kalonzo Musyoka at 10 percent which was the same in the poll released earlier February.

Most of the 1,523 respondents would vote for Odinga in case of a run-off between him and either of other top presidential candidates.

“Raila would get 44 percent while Uhuru 42 percent in a run-off; Raila versus Kalonzo 44 percent and 41 percent respectively. Raila and Gichugu MP Martha Karua, he would get 43 percent against Karua’s 33 percent. With Ruto, Raila would get 50 percent against 33 percent,” the poll showed.

But in case of a run-off between Kenyatta and Prof George Saitoti or Musyoka or Ruto, Kenyatta would be the most preferred candidate with close to 50 percent support.

However the research indicated there was a notable percentage of Kenyans who were undecided on who to support in case of a run-off.

If Kenyatta and Ruto are barred from vying for the presidency because of the International Criminal Court indictments, 45 and 47 percent of Kenyans believe nothing will happen during the general elections.

But about 28 percent of Kenyans think if the duo will not be running for the seat, their supporters will cause violence while four percent feel their parties will have to choose other flag bearers.

According to the poll, Kenyans remain almost half way divided if Ruto and Kenyatta should run for the presidency now that their cases have been confirmed at the International Criminal Court.

Forty eight percent want Kenyatta to run, 46 do not want him to vie. This compares to 47 percent of respondents who would want Ruto on the ballot while 47 percent would advice him to drop his ambitions.
