Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka says another Sh948 million will be set aside in the financial year 2012/2013 for the continuation of the exercise.
“We reassure all Kenyans that the government will issue ID cards to all eligible Kenyans. I appeal to all unregistered person to seek registration during this period,” he told journalists at his office.
Musyoka further said out of the 1.4 million IDs processed last September, thousands were still lying uncollected in various chief camps.
He called on Kenyans who have not picked their IDs, to do so and at the same time urged those looking for new IDs to make use of the mobile registration going on around the country.
The VP also announced registration for Kenyans living in the Diaspora had been rolled out, with IDs already issued to Kenyans living in with London. (See related story).
“In view of the dual citizenship provision in the Constitution, registration of persons in the Diaspora has been launched. Registration in London will cover countries in Europe while registration in Washington, USA will extend to the rest of America,” he asserted.
According to him, a similar exercise will start in South Africa and Dubai among other countries.
He indicated that the exercise being carried out by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will kick off early enough before the general elections are held.
Kalonzo also reminded Kenyans that there is no cost involved when applying for new IDs but replacements will cost Sh300.
He also said it will be no longer mandatory for married women to present affidavits or require their parents’ approval in order to apply for IDs.
“The requirement that married women should produce affidavits or are referred to their parents for registration has been waived in order to expedite the process and enrol as many eligible Kenyans as possible,” he asserted.
Kenyans acquire national identity cards when they turn 18.
