Policing Oversight Authority nominees shortlisted

Currently, complaints within the police are handled by an internal department/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – Five candidates have been shortlisted for the chairman’s post at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority whose interviews were carried out two weeks ago.

They include Macharia Njeru, Kinuthia Wamwangi, Margret K. Cheboiwo, Dorcas Agik Odhong Oduor and Grace Nekoye Katasi.

The chairman of the selection panel Tache Gollo said the shortlisted candidates will be interviewed further at a public session on February 20 at the Public Service Commission offices.

“Members of the public are invited to submit any information that has a bearing on the selection of any of the candidates,” Gollo said in newspaper advertisement on Friday.

Those willing to submit information to the panel were asked to do so on or before February 14.

The panel is mandated to nominate members of the authority which will be responsible for investigating complaints raised against police officers.

Currently, complaints within the police are handled by an internal department which comprises police officers.

Civil rights groups have previously protested that police officers cannot investigate themselves.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority is provided for under the new Constitution.

It is expected to provide independent and transparent mechanisms of dealing with complains raise by members of the public against police officers or even amongst police officers themselves.
