Environment Minister John Michuki/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 – Environment Minister John Michuki is admitted to the Aga Khan hospital where he is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

Government spokesman Alfred Mutua said Michuki was admitted to the hospital on Sunday night.

“Michuki flew back into the country from treatment in the UK last Thursday. Yesterday, Sun 19th he was admitted at Aga Khan hospital where he is undergoing medical procedures and is responding well to treatment,” Mutua said in a statement to counter reports on social media.

The Environment Minister was conspicuously absent during the opening of the 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council at the United Nations Office at Gigiri that was presided over by President Mwai Kibaki on Monday morning.

He has been missing from public engagements for some time now.

The rumours on social media on Michuki’s health were started by a journalist and generated intense public debate.

The rumours come weeks after a posting on social media on the health of former Cabinet Minister Njenga Karume by a local TV station turned out to be bogus.
