NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 17 – Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto on Friday came face-to-face with Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, barely 24 hours after they opted to wipe him out of the G7 political alliance.

The three leaders met at the funeral service of slain Nairobi lawyer Rose Wathiru Waruinge, who was Kenyatta’s kin.

Although the leaders kept off the brewing stand-off, Kenyatta reiterated his stance over calls for his resignation as deputy Prime Minister saying he had no intention of quitting.

“As you know I have already lost one job and I have no intention of losing the second, at least in the immediate future, so if you will allow me pastor I would like to ask my boss the Vice President to come and say a word so he can keep sending the good word up there,” he said amidst applause.

Musyoka assured Kenyatta of his support telling him he had his back.

The VP left the memorial service before the sermon was delivered, evading inquisitive journalists.

Although the VP’s aides had indicated that he was heading to Mary Mwangangi’s (former Traffic Commandant) memorial service, he did not show up.

Ruto did not get a chance to speak during the service and he also left before the sermon was delivered.

When he spoke, the VP called for speedy investigations into Waruinge’s shooting saying the culprits must be apprehended.

“I think if there’s one case that the Attorney General should quickly recommend to the Director of Public Prosecutions is the prosecution of those behind this killing,” he challenged.

Other prominent personalities who attended the memorial service were Gichugu MP Martha Karua, Attorney General Githu Muigai, former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, former Chief Justice Evans Gicheru, Law Society of Kenya Chairman-elect Eric Mutua and Lady Justice Mary Ang’awa, among others.

Both Karua and Muigai paid glowing tribute to the slain lawyer saying she would be remembered for her humility, kind heart and strong belief in women’s empowerment.

“Rose has slept but she lives through her deeds and words. She was an accomplished lawyer yet a very humble person; a caring human being ready to support everyone,” said Karua.

She added that there was urgent need to enhance the security in the country to avoid the needless loss of lives.

The late Waruinge, who co-founded the Waruinge and Waruinge Advocates with her late husband, was killed by gunmen on Friday night at her Kilimani residence.

Muigai, who is a close friend of the family, described the deceased as a matriarch of high Christian standing.

“I have come this morning to mourn a sister. Rose was a strong woman of character in the little town that we grew up in. We went to Sunday school together and although she was a few years older, she was already a nursery school teacher,” he said.

Public Health Minister Beth Mugo also sent tributes to the family from the United States where she is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, saying those responsible should be apprehended.
