Ruto said the G7 Alliance would continue working together/VPPS
NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 23 – The G7 Alliance put on another show of unity as Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta attended the launch of electronic membership recruitment for William Ruto’s United Republican Party (URP).
Speaking at the URP headquarters on Thursday, Ruto said the G7 Alliance would continue working together and ensure they remain united up to the general election.
Though he admitted that there are “the usual differences within the alliance,” he said they would focus on issues that unite them.
“There are areas we disagree but there are wide ranging areas where we actually agree. We will build a solid team to face elections,” he vowed.
He brushed off assumptions that the G7 Alliance was crumbling following indication that Kalonzo and his Wiper party had been pushed out of the alliance.
“There has been misunderstanding by many people who do not support our togetherness. We have confirmed this afternoon that the G7 Alliance will be as solid as ever. We have agreed to work together on basis of honesty,” he asserted.
In his short speech during the launch, Musyoka congratulated URP for embracing the new technological approach which he noted was a positive step to increasing the membership of his party.
He also congratulated URP insinuating that his Wiper party will benefit from the newly launched registration: “Ruto said that this technology can be shared between the friendly parties. The temptation of the hackers was there if this offer did not come through.”
He said forming political alliances was the best option for ‘like-minded parties as the way to go for anyone interested in the country’s future leadership’.
He said the alliance existing between him and other leaders such as Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto was unassailable, and for the good of the country: “I am here to show a sense of solidarity and to tell the doubting Thomases to leave us alone because they cannot crack this unity.”
On his part, Kenyatta urged G7 partners to stay united with the aim of bringing all Kenyans together to ensure a repeat of the violence that marred the 2007 general election doesn’t recur.
The launch was witnessed by among other URP supporters, 28 Members of Parliament and former Speaker Francis ole Kaparo.
The electronic registration will allow Kenyans to register as URP members on the Internet by sending their names, national identity numbers and their county.
Ruto said the process will save time and paper used in the manual membership registration.
He said people can use Internet and their mobile phones where they will be required to send their details to a number for registration.
“Our members from across the globe can register as members by going to www.urp.co.ke they will find a registration form and they will be registered within minutes. For the mobile registration, they can send their details as a text message to 7711, under one minute they will get a membership number of URP,” he said.
He also said the move is youth friendly looking at the diverse development in technology especially with the upsurge of social media.
The Eldoret North MP launched his party on Jan 15.
