NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 10 – President Mwai Kibaki has underscored the need to clear the backlog of cases before the country’s judicial system.

President Kibaki said that there was need to recruit more judges and expressed optimism that out of a large pool of qualified legal professionals in the country, more judicial staff would be hired to ensure appropriate staffing levels in the Judiciary.

The President encouraged young legal practitioners to apply for the jobs once they are advertised.
The Head of State made the remarks on Tuesday at State House, Nairobi where he witnessed the swearing-in of seven newly appointed Court of Appeal judges.

The colourful ceremony was conducted by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Gladys Boss Shollei.

Congratulating the newly appointed judges, President Kibaki urged them to focus on efficient and timely dispensation of justice assuring them of any support needed in the execution of their mandate.

President Kibaki urged the new court of appeal judges to uphold integrity, promote the spirit of teamwork among themselves, avoid distractions and focus on dispensing justice in accordance with the law.

He expressed confidence that the Judges were equal to the task ahead of them and urged them to use their vast knowledge and skills to restore Kenyans’ faith in the country’s new-look judicial system.

The President affirmed that Kenya was poised to become a model nation in Africa due to commendable accomplishments in the socio-economic and political sectors.

He assured that the Executive will also fully support the work of the Judiciary.

Earlier President Kibaki conferred on Chief Justice, Dr Willy Mutunga, the Elder Of the Golden Heart of Kenya (EGH) for his distinguished service to the nation and for his role in leading reforms in the Judiciary under the new constitutional dispensation.

The ceremony was also witnessed by Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Among those sworn-in included Lady Justices Roseline Nambuye, Wanjiru Karanja, Martha Koome, Kalpana Rawal, Hannah Magondi Okwengu, and Justices Paul Kihara Kariuki and David Kenani Maraga.

Also in attendance were Cabinet Ministers Mutula Kilonzo and James Orengo, Attorney General Prof Githu Muigai, Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi, Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, members of the Judicial Service Commission, senior Government officials and family members of the newly appointed judges.
