KNEC gaffe alters top schools list

Marell Academy has already sent a letter of complaint to KNEC/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 29 – The Kenya National Examinations Council has clarified that Marell Academy in Bungoma County is now the number one private school in the 2011 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination with a mean score of 411.78.

The school that did not feature in Thursday’s KCPE top 10 private school list, registered a class of 32 candidates, according to the revised list.

Speaking to Capital News, class eight Mathematics teacher David Kang’o from Marell said the news brought a great sigh of relief to the school and community.

“We’re very happy. It affected stakeholders, parents and teachers when we did not see the school on the top ten list. We’ve finally gotten our justice,” he said.

Kang’o said 27 of the 32 KCPE candidates at the school scored over 400 marks with the top student getting 431 and the lowest scorer receiving 391.

Bungoma County as a whole ranked 29th out of the 47 counties registering a mean score of 245.30.

Marell Academy has already sent a letter of complaint to KNEC expressing concern over the muddle via email, as well as fax and post, according to Kang’o.

The amended list of this year’s KCPE top private schools now places Gilgil Hills Academy second with a mean score of 410.45 marks.

The list also revealed more changes to the top public school list with All Saints Kebulunik Academy in third place, followed by ACK Wote Township in fourth and St Mathews Septonok in the fifth position.

Sukari Presbyterian now ranks as the sixth top public school in the 2011 KCPE results, two spots down from its original position of fourth in yesterday’s report.
