Experts called in after bomb scare in church /FILE
NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 25- Police on Sunday evacuated a congregation at the Holy Family Basilica following a bomb scare, a few minutes after the mass started.
Nairobi Provincial Police Officer Antony Kibuchi told journalists that a worshiper alerted the police after noticing another churchgoer whom he suspected was armed.
“There was a worshipper here who was very alert and he suspected that somebody (in the church) was probably armed and he alerted us,” he explained.
Bomb experts were called in to comb the area but did not find any explosives.
“We have checked; we have cleared the whole place and found out that there was nothing,” he added.
Kibuchi commended the worshiper and pointed out that the alert was a demonstration that efforts by the police to sensitise Kenyans on the need to be vigilant were bearing fruit.
“I am very happy for that alertness and this is what we want. The information on any person who appears to be suspicious must be passed on to us (police) immediately,” he cautioned.
His call has been echoed by many leaders such as Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka who appealed to transporters and bus companies, plying the routes that link to North Eastern Province, to exercise care and ensure that they do not ferry criminals linked to the Al-Shabaab.
Police are on high alert this festive season after Somali militia group Al Shabaab issued renewed terror threats against Kenya.
Meanwhile, Kibuchi has disclosed that they have acquired advanced detector machines for screening for any concealed weapons.
‘The government has gone out of its way to buy those expensive machines and equip us so that we are able to detect any explosives and ensure that Kenyans are safe,” he explained.
