NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3- Immediate former Deputy Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor Hezron Nyangito has died at his Karen home after a long illness.

Nyangito has been battling health problems since he was appointed to the post in September 2008.

Just last week, President Mwai Kibaki named the then Deputy Director in the Debt Management Department at the Ministry of Finance Haron Sirima as the new deputy governor. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, who explained that Nyangito was replaced due to his deteriorating health.

Prior to his appointment at the Central Bank, Nyangito served as a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health from 2005.

He had extensive experience in economic policy research and analysis, focusing primarily on development economics.

Nyangito’s talent was often sought by several global organisations namely the World Bank, World Trade Organisation (WTO) and African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) where he offered insight as a consultant.

A PhD graduate in Agricultural and Development Economics from the University of Tennessee, USA, Nyangito would go on to hold various positions in parastatals and academia.

He worked his way up to the Executive Director at the Kenya Institute of Public Policy, Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), then moved on to the Institute of Policy Analysis and Research (IPAR) as a Senior Research Fellow.

Eventually, Nyangito returned to his alma mater University of Nairobi in 1987 where he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics until exiting in 1995.
