Kaberia was declared the 2011 runner up Radio Journalist in Gender and Development Category of the Kenya Media Network on Population and Development (KEMEP) annual awards.
The winning story “Grappling with being a transgender” co-authored by Olivia Moraa, focused on a man who has began a journey of transforming himself to a woman. The story seeks to establish if transgender is a medical condition or a matter of personal choice.
Kaberia also got another award for commitment in reporting on gender, reproductive health and population issues.
In the five categories awarded by the Kenya media Network on Population in conjunction with United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA), the National Coordinating Agency for Population and Development (NACPD) and UNICEF saw other journalists scoop awards for stories vetted by senior editors from different media houses.
Other winners include KBC’s Geoffrey Onditi who scooped Best Radio Journalist in Gender and Development award, K24’s Jane Ngoiri – 2011 Best Television Journalist in Gender and Development.
