10 die as matatu swept by floods in Transmara

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 – Ten people have died after a matatu they were travelling in was swept away by raging floods in Transmara on Sunday night.

Police said the matatu was carrying 16 passengers when it was swept away by floods as the driver struggled to pass through raging waters.

“It was a very bad accident, bodies of eight people were recovered last [Sunday] night while two were found this morning,” area police chief Titus Yoma said.

He said six of the survivors including the matatu driver were taken to hospital.

The matatu was travelling from Kilgoris to Nyangusu when the incident occurred in Poroko area.

“It has been raining heavily and the bridges here are swollen. We are urging drivers and people who cross the bridges to be careful to avoid disasters such as this one,” Yoma said.

Various parts of the country are experiencing heavy rains since last month.

Areas most affected include Nairobi, Nyanza, North Eastern Province, Eastern and parts of Rift Valley Provinces.
