MP Mike Sonko in court on Wednesday

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 21 – Makadara MP Gideon Mbuvi alias Mike Sonko was charged before a Kibera Court on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Sonko denied assaulting Chief Inspector Linus Shimoli on Monday at the Departure Lounge of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while the officer was executing official duties of crowd control.

The flamboyant legislator was also accused of refusing to follow lawful instructions given by an authorised person for the purpose of ensuring safety at JKIA.

Sonko faced a third count of threatening breach of the peace.

He however denied the charges and was resealed on a cash bail of Sh100,000 pending trial on November 16.

Capital News got exclusive video footage of the drama at the JKIA on Monday night as Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta was checking in to leave for his confirmation of charges at The Hague.

The fracas began when Sonko, Embakasi legislator Ferdinand Waititu and Juja’s William Kabogo engaged police officers in a scuffle as they tried to force their way into the international departure terminal.

Sonko, who came in crutches, claimed he was unwell and should therefore be granted special access into the terminal to escort the Deputy Prime Minister.

“This is Nairobi city. Why are you pushing us? Let us in,” some of the MPs’ supporters could be heard shouting.
