NEW YORK, Sep 26 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga was the first world leader to sign the new ground-breaking Charter at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The charter is expected to help in curbing the humanitarian crisis experienced in East Africa.

The United Nations widely recognised Kenya’s generosity towards Somali refugees, through developing infrastructure in the semi-arid areas as well the dynamic and modernising economy which prevented the worst of the famine, and the progress made in promoting reconciliation in the country and Cabinet.

This was reached at during the General Assembly Mini Summit on Somalia and the launching by Odinga of an international campaign by major NGOs on the responsibility to prevent famines being spearheaded by Save the Children and Bob Geldof.

Delegate after delegate hailed Kenya’s generosity in hosting more than half a million refugees and keeping its borders open despite the enormous security risks that this entails.
