Lethal drink leaves 9 dead in Kenyan town

Nyahururu District Hospital

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Sep 13 – Nine people have been confirmed dead after reportedly drinking an illicit brew in Nyahururu town and Ol-Kalou.

Seven of them died at the sprawling Kiamaina slum in the outskirts of Nyahururu town.

Nyandarua District police boss Jaspher Ombati confirmed that other two middle-aged men were found dead in Ol-Kalou town and that an investigation has been launched to establish the source of the brew they consumed.

According to residents and leaders from Kiamaina village, three people died on Sunday night while four others died on Monday night. The deceased are reported to have been in a drinking spree in some of the beer dens within the town before they met their death.
The killer moonshine has been identified as “Lokozuna.”

Anne Wambui, a wife to one of the victims said her husband Peter Gitau was a habitual drunkard and died on Monday at home after taking the drink with his friends.

She told Capital News that she was called from her home by a neighbour who informed her that her husband was sick only to find him dead.  His cousin also died several hours later.

Former Nyahururu deputy Mayor Irene Wacuka who visited victims at the Nyahururu District Hospital called on the government to mount an operation against those selling the illicit drinks to avert similar incidents.

The victims were aged between 25 and 40 years and their bodies have been moved to the Nyahururu district mortuary.

Consequently a massive crackdown has been launched on unlicensed bar operators and several suspects are now being held at the Nyahururu police station.
