Kitutu Masaba by-election set for Nov 28

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 12 – The Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) has announced that the Kitutu Masaba by-election will be held on November 28.

IIEC Chairman Isaack Hassan has already issued writs to Returning Officer Fredrick Owino. He said the party candidates are expected to present their nomination papers to the commission on November 2 and 3.

By-elections in 10 civic wards countrywide will also be held on the same day.

The Kitutu Masaba seat fell vacant after the Kisii High Court nullified the 2007 election of Walter Nyambati on August 12.

The by-election will most likely be conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Candidates will be expected to meet requirements for integrity as stipulated in the Constitution.

This will include handing over clearance certificates by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). The will also be expected to produce a certificate of good conduct among other requirements.

The seat has already attracted three aspirants who include gospel artist Alex Nyanchoga Apoko popularly known as Ringtone.

The artiste has claimed that most of the young people in the constituency have asked him to go for the seat as they want a younger representative who will not only represent their needs in Parliament but also one they feel will solve their problems as youths.
