Kenya to get drenched after dry spell

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 7 – Kenya is expected to receive adequate rainfall during the October to December short rains season, according to the Kenya Meteorological department.

The forecast, delivered by Director Joseph Mukabana on Wednesday will come as good news after a prolonged drought that has left an estimated 3.5 million Kenyans facing starvation in various parts of the country.

This, he said would greatly improve agricultural activities in most parts of the country.

“Diversification in crops is still important,” he advised farmers and asked them to liaise with the Ministry of Agriculture to make best use of the rains in planting appropriate crops.

He said heavy downpour that could lead to floods was expected in Nairobi, parts of Rift Valley, Central, Southern parts of Eastern and the Coast.

“Heavy storms are likely to occur during the season and more so during the rainfall peak month of November,” he warned.

Rainfall distribution is expected to be poor in North Western, North Eastern, South Eastern lowlands and parts of Coast province.

“In terms of food security at household level, farmers are advised not to sell all the food they have in stores for future use,” Dr Mukabana advised.

Foliage and pasture conditions in the pastoral areas of Northern, Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya were expected to improve as a result of expected good rainfall performance during the season.

But the Northern and Northeastern parts of the country currently experiencing severe drought conditions would still need humanitarian emergency assistance up to the long rains season of 2012.

The short rains are also expected to increase water levels in both water supply and hydroelectric power generating dams in the Tana and Turkwel river systems.

The rains were predicted to begin in the first week of October and end in the last week of December apart from the Central Rift where it’s expected to extend into January next year.
